Sonny Sarkar

Jazz · Neo-soul · Funk

Chasing the
right note.

Jazz first, with neo-soul and funk close behind. I'm working toward session-level guitar with a solid theory backbone: voicings I can move, lines that target chord tones, and time that swings.

Practice

01 — In the woodshed

What I'm practising

i

Shell voicings and drop-2

Comping vocabulary built from 3rds and 7ths, extended into drop-2 shapes across the middle strings.

ii

ii–V–I voice leading

Smooth motion between chords: keeping common tones and moving by step through the changes.

iii

Bebop scales

Dominant, major and Dorian bebop scales, so eighth-note lines land chord tones on the beat.

iv

Approach notes and enclosures

Chromatic approaches and enclosures applied to ii–V–I progressions for a jazzier vocabulary.

v

Altered dominants and m7♭5

Colour for the V chord and the minor ii: altered sounds, half-diminished shapes, melodic minor sources.

vi

Reading while comping

Following a chart bar by bar while the swing feel keeps going underneath.

02 — Repertoire

Standards

Tunes I can comp and solo through, called at jam sessions.

Blue Bossa

C minor

03 — Listen

Recordings

Hotel California solo

My take on the iconic solo, harmonic minor and pentatonic scales over the original progression.

Dört Duvar solo

My solo over Dört Duvar by Canby and Wolker.

Flamenco improvisation

Flamenco style solo over a classical Am–G–F–E progression.

04 — Rig

Guitar

Jackson JS32 Super-Stratocaster

HH, 24 frets, compound radius — versatile for rock, metal and blues, warm enough for jazz. Ibanez AEG50 acoustic for unplugged sessions.

Amp and pedals

Guitar Rig 7 Pro → Focusrite Scarlett 2i2

Amp modelling into a low-latency interface. Ernie Ball Regular Slinky strings, Gravity Standard Tipp pick.

Software

Ableton Live 13

DAW for composition, recording and live performance.
